Operating Systems


An Operating System is the most important software that runs on a computer.It is a system software which controls amd coordinates the internal working of the computer and performs a large number of functions which are essential to operate the computer system.
Some of the functions that an operating system performs are as follows :



* The operating system provides basic interface between the user to work on the computer.

* It receives commands from the users and makes the computer hardware to act on these commands.

* The operating system provides a platform on which other software (including application software) can run on the computer.


Types of Operating system

There are two types of operating systems depending on the type of Interface they have :



1. Operating systems can have a Character User Interface (CUI), where text is the primary media through which a user interacts with the operating system. MS DOS and UNIX OS, are two most popular CUI based operating systems.



2. Operating system can have a Graphical User Interface (GUI), where you can interact with the computer by clicking at graphical icons and commands instead of typical textual commands on the command prompt. MS Windows OS with yellow,Mac OS and Linux OS, are the most popular GUI based operating systems.
